How to Get Clinical Hours in Florida

Florida has some of the best clinical training environments in the country. Here is where to find meaningful patient contact hours — and how to document them correctly for AMCAS.

How many clinical hours do you need?

There is no universal minimum — expectations vary by school and cycle, and most programs do not publish a specific hour target. Many advisors suggest building meaningful direct patient contact across multiple settings. Clinical experience in underserved or community health settings is valued by many programs, particularly those with explicit primary care or community health missions. Quality of reflection matters as much as raw hours: a student with fewer hours and a compelling narrative will often outperform one with many hours and nothing meaningful to say about them.

Dr. Tomei's Perspective

The biggest mistake I see Florida pre-meds make with clinical hours is treating them as a checkbox. You are not collecting hours — you are building a clinical narrative. Every experience should teach you something about medicine, about patients, or about yourself. If you cannot articulate what you learned, the hours are not working for you.

Major Florida Hospital Systems for Pre-Med Volunteers

Jackson Health System — Miami

Miami

Jackson Memorial Hospital is the flagship of Jackson Health System and one of the largest public hospitals in the country. It is a Level 1 Trauma Center and a major teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.

Tip: Jackson has a formal volunteer program through their volunteer services office. Apply early — spots can fill quickly. Check their website for current availability and application windows.

AdventHealth — Orlando and Central Florida

Orlando

AdventHealth operates a large network of hospitals across Central Florida, including the flagship AdventHealth Orlando. Strong programs in oncology, cardiac care, and orthopedics.

Tip: AdventHealth has a structured volunteer program with online applications. Check their volunteer services page for current availability — programs and openings change seasonally.

BayCare Health System — Tampa Bay

Tampa / St. Petersburg

BayCare operates 16 hospitals across the Tampa Bay area, including St. Joseph's Hospital and Morton Plant Hospital. Strong community hospital network with broad specialty access.

Tip: BayCare is one of the more accessible systems for pre-med volunteers in the Tampa area. Check their volunteer services portal for current openings.

UF Health — Gainesville and Jacksonville

Gainesville / Jacksonville

UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville is the primary teaching hospital for the University of Florida College of Medicine. UF Health Jacksonville is a Level 1 Trauma Center serving Northeast Florida.

Tip: If you are a UF student, your university affiliation may help you navigate the volunteer application process — ask your pre-health office whether they have established contacts at Shands.

Mayo Clinic — Jacksonville

Jacksonville

Mayo Clinic's Florida campus in Jacksonville is one of the most prestigious clinical environments in the state. Strong programs in complex and rare diseases, cardiology, and oncology.

Tip: Mayo Clinic is highly competitive for volunteer positions. Apply well in advance and be prepared to commit to a consistent schedule. Check their volunteer page for current availability.

Broward Health — Fort Lauderdale

Fort Lauderdale

Broward Health is a public health system with four hospitals in Broward County. Strong trauma, pediatrics, and community health programs. Affiliated with NSU-COM for clinical training.

Tip: Broward Health is a good option for South Florida applicants who want public hospital experience. Apply through their volunteer services portal and check for current openings.

Free Clinics and Underserved Health Programs

Free clinic and community health experience is valued by many medical schools, particularly those with explicit missions around underserved care. These settings also tend to provide the most meaningful direct patient contact — and the most compelling material for your personal statement.

Camillus Health Concern — Miami

A free clinic serving Miami's homeless and underserved population. Volunteer opportunities for pre-med students in patient intake, health education, and clinical support.

HOPE Free Clinic — Gainesville

Student-run free clinic affiliated with the University of Florida. One of the most competitive and rewarding clinical volunteer experiences for UF pre-meds.

Tampa Bay Street Medicine

A street medicine program providing care to Tampa's homeless population. Unique clinical exposure that demonstrates commitment to underserved medicine.

Community Health of South Florida (CHI)

A federally qualified health center network serving Miami-Dade County. Volunteer and scribe opportunities available at multiple locations.

Volunteers in Medicine — Jacksonville

Free clinic serving uninsured adults in Jacksonville. Strong volunteer program with consistent scheduling and meaningful patient contact.

EMT Certification and Medical Scribing in Florida

EMT Certification

Florida has a robust EMS system and multiple pathways to EMT certification. Programs are available through community colleges (Miami Dade College, Valencia College, Hillsborough Community College) and typically take 3–6 months. EMT work provides some of the highest-quality clinical hours available to pre-med students — direct patient contact, real emergencies, and a clear demonstration of commitment to medicine.

Medical Scribing

Medical scribing is widely available in Florida through companies like ScribeAmerica and Aquity Solutions, as well as directly through hospital systems. Scribing gives you direct exposure to physician decision-making and clinical documentation. It counts as clinical experience in AMCAS and often leads to shadowing opportunities with the physicians you work with.

How to Document Clinical Hours in AMCAS

Log every clinical experience separately in AMCAS — do not combine hospital volunteering and free clinic work into one entry.

For each experience, record the organization name, supervisor name and contact, start/end dates, and total hours.

AMCAS gives you 700 characters per experience description. Use them to describe what you did, what you observed, and what you learned.

One experience can be designated as "Most Meaningful" — you get 1,325 characters for that one. Choose the experience where your reflection is deepest.

Clinical hours and volunteer hours are separate categories in AMCAS. Make sure you categorize correctly.

Do not inflate hours. Accurate reporting is essential — inconsistencies between your application and what a supervisor can confirm raise serious concerns.
