AMCAS vs. AACOMAS: What Georgia Pre-Meds Need to Know

All Georgia MD programs — Emory, Medical College of Georgia, Morehouse, and Mercer — use AMCAS (American Medical College Application Service). Georgia DO programs use AACOMAS (American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine Application Service). These are two completely separate applications with different essays, different deadlines, and different strategies.

AMCAS opens in late May each year. The most competitive applicants submit by June 1 — the earlier you submit, the better your chances at all programs. AMCAS uses a personal statement plus 15 activity entries. Secondary essays are sent directly by each school after your primary is verified.

Georgia residency is a significant advantage at Medical College of Georgia and Mercer University, both of which have explicit Georgia workforce missions. Over 90% of MCG seats go to Georgia residents. Emory and Morehouse are more nationally competitive, though Georgia residents still have a meaningful edge at Morehouse.

The AMCAS vs. AACOMAS distinction is the single most important thing pre-meds applying to both MD and DO programs need to understand. I have worked with students who spent months perfecting their AMCAS application and then realized they needed an entirely separate AACOMAS application for DO programs. Start both applications simultaneously if you are applying to both. The essays are different, the deadlines are different, and the strategy is different.

PCOM Georgia is a strong option for applicants who understand osteopathic medicine and can demonstrate patient-centered, whole-person care values.

The Georgia In-State Advantage — and Its Limits

Georgia residents applying to Medical College of Georgia and Mercer University have one of the strongest in-state advantages in the country. Over 90% of MCG seats go to Georgia residents. If you are a Georgia resident with a competitive application, you should absolutely prioritize these schools.

But in-state status is not a free pass. Emory's average MCAT of ~519 and GPA of ~3.8 are among the highest in the country. Being a Georgia resident gets you in the pool — it does not guarantee admission. Your application still needs to be exceptional.

For out-of-state applicants, Morehouse College of Medicine is the most accessible Georgia MD program — it uses AMCAS and evaluates all applicants on the same criteria with a mission-driven lens. PCOM Georgia is also open to out-of-state DO applicants.

I tell Georgia pre-meds the same thing every cycle: apply to both MD and DO programs if your stats and goals support it. Use your Georgia residency advantage for MCG and Mercer, but don't limit yourself to Georgia. The strongest applications I've seen from Georgia students apply to 15–20 schools total — a mix of Georgia programs and national schools. That is the right strategy.
