Volunteer Opportunities on Long Island for Pre-Med Students

Not all volunteering is equal. Here is where to find meaningful clinical and community volunteer experience on Long Island — and how to tell the difference between what counts and what does not.

What counts as clinical volunteering

Direct patient contact — hospital volunteering, free clinics, hospice

Clinical support roles — patient transport, clinical assistant positions

Community health education — health fairs, screening programs

EMT or first responder volunteering (see our EMT guide)

What does not count as clinical hours

Administrative hospital volunteering with no patient contact

General community service with no health connection

One-time events without ongoing commitment
