Connecticut has three allopathic and osteopathic medical schools, each with a distinct mission, curriculum and approach to evaluating applicants. Connecticut applicants should generally build a balanced national MD and/or DO school list rather than applying only to the three programs located in the state.
Yale School of Medicine is a highly selective research-focused institution known for its student-as-scholar curriculum, which emphasizes independent research alongside clinical training. Yale attracts applicants with strong research backgrounds and intellectual curiosity. It is among the most competitive medical schools in the country.
The University of Connecticut School of Medicine is Connecticut's public medical school, with a mission emphasizing primary care, community health and service to the state. UConn gives preference to Connecticut residents in its admissions process and is known for its strong primary care and family medicine programs.
The Frank H. Netter MD School of Medicine at Quinnipiac University is a newer allopathic program with an integrated curriculum and a focus on interprofessional education. It offers a collaborative learning environment and draws students interested in a community-oriented, team-based approach to medicine.
Acceptance rates, GPA averages and MCAT averages change each cycle. Consult each school's official website and the AAMC's Medical School Admissions Requirements (MSAR) for current, verified data.
MedTrack Mentors provides virtual premed advising to students throughout Connecticut, including those in Stamford, Greenwich, Norwalk, Bridgeport, Fairfield, New Haven, Hartford, Farmington, West Hartford, Storrs and Hamden. All services are conducted virtually — there is no Connecticut office.
MedTrack Mentors helps students evaluate and plan meaningful clinical exposure, community service, research and physician shadowing as part of a coherent application strategy. Connecticut has a number of healthcare systems — including Yale New Haven Health, Hartford HealthCare, UConn Health, Stamford Health and Nuvance Health — that students may independently investigate as potential sites for volunteering, scribing or shadowing. MedTrack Mentors does not have partnerships with any of these organizations and does not guarantee placements. The goal is to help you identify the right opportunities and present them compellingly in your application.
Major Connecticut Healthcare Systems
Yale New Haven Health
Official site →One of the largest health systems in New England. Yale New Haven Hospital, Bridgeport Hospital, and Greenwich Hospital are all part of this system. Students interested in volunteering or scribing should check each hospital's volunteer services page directly. Yale SOM applicants benefit from familiarity with the system's clinical environment.
Hartford HealthCare
Official site →A statewide system including Hartford Hospital, MidState Medical Center, and The Hospital of Central Connecticut. Volunteer and patient care aide opportunities vary by facility — check the Hartford HealthCare careers and volunteer pages for current openings.
UConn Health (John Dempsey Hospital)
Official site →The academic medical center affiliated with UConn School of Medicine. Students attending UConn or nearby colleges may find scribing and volunteer opportunities here. Proximity to the Farmington campus makes it a natural starting point for UConn premed students.
Stamford Health
Official site →A community health system in Fairfield County. Stamford Hospital offers volunteer programs that may be accessible to students at Fairfield University, Sacred Heart University, and other southwestern CT colleges. Verify current availability on the Stamford Health website.
Nuvance Health
Official site →Operates Danbury Hospital, Norwalk Hospital, and other facilities across western Connecticut and the Hudson Valley. Students in Fairfield County and the greater Danbury area should check Nuvance Health's volunteer and career pages for current openings.
Physician Shadowing in Connecticut
Physician shadowing in Connecticut typically requires a direct outreach to individual physicians or department coordinators. Cold-email outreach to primary care, emergency medicine, and surgery departments at the hospitals above is a common starting point. UConn and Quinnipiac students may also have access to shadowing through their pre-health advising offices — check with your school's pre-health advisor for any formal programs. Yale SOM does not require a specific shadowing minimum, but meaningful clinical exposure is expected. UConn and Quinnipiac both value documented patient contact hours.
MedTrack Mentors does not have partnerships with any healthcare organization listed above and does not guarantee shadowing or volunteer placements. Verify current volunteer eligibility, application requirements, and availability directly with each organization before applying.
Dr. Tomei brings the perspective of someone who has sat on the other side of the admissions table. His guidance is grounded in how committees actually evaluate applications — not in generic advice or templates.
