Virginia has some of the best clinical training environments in the country — starting with UVA Health in Charlottesville, VCU Medical Center in Richmond, and Inova Fairfax in Northern Virginia. Here is where to find meaningful patient contact hours and how to document them correctly for AMCAS.

How many clinical hours do you need?

Most competitive Virginia MD applicants have 150–300+ hours of direct patient contact. Virginia schools — especially UVA School of Medicine and Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine — value clinical experience in underserved settings. Quality and reflection matter as much as raw hours. A student with 200 hours and a compelling narrative will outperform a student with 500 hours and nothing meaningful to say about them.

Virginia pre-meds have an enormous advantage when it comes to clinical hours — Charlottesville, Richmond, Northern Virginia, Norfolk, and Roanoke together have more clinical training opportunities than most entire states. The challenge is not finding opportunities; it is choosing the right ones and building a coherent clinical narrative. Every experience should teach you something about medicine, about patients, or about yourself. If you cannot articulate what you learned, the hours are not working for you.

UVA Health — Charlottesville

Tip: UVA Health has a structured volunteer program. University of Virginia pre-med students have a natural pipeline here. Apply early — positions fill quickly each fall.

VCU Medical Center — Richmond

VCU Medical Center is the primary teaching hospital for Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine and a Level 1 Trauma Center. Strong programs in trauma, emergency medicine, and transplant. The largest academic medical center in Virginia.

Tip: VCU Medical Center has a competitive volunteer program. Emphasize your interest in underserved medicine and complex cases in your application.

Inova Fairfax Hospital — Falls Church

Inova Fairfax is the flagship hospital of Inova Health System and a Level 1 Trauma Center serving Northern Virginia and the DC metro area. Strong programs in cardiology, neurology, and women's health.

Tip: Inova Health System is one of the best places in Northern Virginia for broad clinical exposure. The patient population is diverse and the clinical environment is fast-paced.

Sentara Norfolk General Hospital — Norfolk

Sentara Norfolk General is the primary teaching hospital for Eastern Virginia Medical School and a Level 1 Trauma Center. Strong programs in trauma, emergency medicine, and cardiovascular care.

Tip: Sentara has a structured volunteer program. EVMS pre-med students have a natural advantage for volunteer positions here.

Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital — Roanoke

Carilion Roanoke Memorial is the primary teaching hospital for Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and a Level 1 Trauma Center serving Southwest Virginia. Strong programs in trauma, rural medicine, and primary care.

EMT Certification and Medical Scribing in Virginia

EMT Certification in Virginia

Virginia has a robust EMS system and multiple pathways to EMT certification. Programs are available through community colleges (Northern Virginia Community College, Tidewater Community College, J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College, Virginia Western Community College) and typically take 3–6 months. EMT work provides some of the highest-quality clinical hours available to pre-med students — direct patient contact, real emergencies, and a clear demonstration of commitment to medicine. Virginia EMS certification is governed by the Virginia Department of Health Office of EMS.

Medical Scribing in Virginia

Medical scribing is widely available in Virginia through companies like ScribeAmerica and Aquity Solutions, as well as directly through major Virginia health systems including UVA Health, VCU Medical Center, and Inova Health System. Scribing gives you direct exposure to physician decision-making and clinical documentation. It counts as clinical experience in AMCAS and often leads to shadowing opportunities with the physicians you work with. The Northern Virginia, Richmond, and Charlottesville healthcare communities offer scribing positions across virtually every specialty.

How to Document Clinical Hours in AMCAS and AMCAS

Log every clinical experience separately in AMCAS — do not combine hospital volunteering and free clinic work into one entry.

For each experience, record the organization name, supervisor name and contact, start/end dates, and total hours.

AMCAS gives you 700 characters per experience description. Use them to describe what you did, what you observed, and what you learned.

One experience can be designated as "Most Meaningful" in AMCAS — you get 1,325 characters for that one. Choose the experience where your reflection is deepest.

Clinical hours and volunteer hours are separate categories. Make sure you categorize correctly in AMCAS.

Do not inflate hours. Admissions committees verify, and inconsistencies raise red flags — especially at Virginia schools where committee members may know the institutions personally.

Virginia schools value underserved medicine experience. If you have free clinic or public hospital hours, make sure they are prominently featured in your application.
