MD Medical Schools in Connecticut

A physician-written breakdown of Connecticut's three MD-granting medical schools — mission focus, what each program values in an applicant, and official admissions resources.

Connecticut has three MD-granting medical schools: Yale School of Medicine, the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and the Frank H. Netter MD School of Medicine at Quinnipiac University. Connecticut does not currently have a COCA-accredited DO medical school physically located in the state. For the hub overview of all CT programs, see Yale, UConn and Quinnipiac medical schools.

This guide covers each program with context on mission and what each school values. For current matriculant MCAT, GPA, and admissions data, consult the AAMC Medical School Admission Requirements (MSAR).

Accreditation

All three Connecticut medical schools listed on this page award the MD degree and are accredited through the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME). Applicants should verify current accreditation directly with LCME.

  • Unique curriculum with no grades in the first two years, fostering collaboration over competition
  • Yale-New Haven Hospital and Yale Cancer Center provide extraordinary clinical exposure
  • Strong emphasis on physician-scientist pathway (MD-PhD, Investigative Medicine Program)

Advisor's take: Netter is newer but growing in reputation. The interprofessional model is genuinely distinctive — if you can speak to why team-based care matters to you, that resonates strongly here. Connecticut's Medical School Landscape

Dr. Tomei's Perspective

Connecticut has one of the smallest medical school markets in the country — just three MD programs and no DO programs in-state. That means CT applicants need a broader geographic strategy. Yale is world-class and extraordinarily competitive. UConn serves Connecticut's communities through education, research and clinical care — verify current residency policies through UConn and AAMC MSAR. Netter is newer, genuinely innovative, and growing in reputation. If you are a CT applicant, build a list that reflects your full profile and verify current admissions data through AAMC MSAR and each school's official admissions office.

Connecticut has only three MD programs — Yale, UConn, and Netter — making it one of the smallest medical school markets in the Northeast.

All three programs award the MD degree and are accredited through the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME).

Connecticut does not currently have a COCA-accredited DO medical school physically located in the state.

Current matriculant GPA, MCAT and admissions information should be verified through the AAMC Medical School Admission Requirements database and each school's official admissions office.

CT applicants interested in osteopathic medicine should research accredited DO programs in neighboring states.

Regional DO Options for Connecticut Applicants

Connecticut does not currently have a COCA-accredited DO medical school physically located in the state. Applicants interested in osteopathic medicine may also research accredited programs in neighboring states. Examples include:

  • University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine — Biddeford, Maine
  • New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYITCOM) — Old Westbury, New York
  • Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine — Elmira, New York
  • Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine — Harlem or Middletown, New York

These programs are not Connecticut medical schools. Applicants should verify current accreditation status through AACOM list of U.S. colleges of osteopathic medicine before applying.
