How to Get Patient Care Hours in Connecticut for PA School

A physician-written guide to the best PCE roles in Connecticut — what counts, where to find it, and how to build a competitive patient care profile for CT PA programs.

Patient care experience (PCE) is the most important non-academic component of a PA school application. Connecticut PA programs — especially Yale PA — have high PCE expectations. Yale PA applicants typically present 3,000+ hours; Quinnipiac and Sacred Heart expect 1,000+ hours of direct patient care.

Dr. Tomei's Perspective

The difference between PCE and clinical volunteering matters enormously for PA school. Direct patient care means you are physically touching patients, performing procedures, or making clinical observations — not filing paperwork or directing visitors. EMT, CNA, and PCT roles generally count; scribing varies by program. Hospital volunteering generally does not. Know the difference before you start accumulating hours.

For the national overview, see our complete guide to patient care experience for PA school: what counts and how many hours programs require.

Patient Care Roles in Connecticut

EMT (Emergency Medical Technician)

Counts as PCE

40–80+ hours/month (part-time)

CTEMSAC-approved training programs at community colleges and fire departments statewide. Volunteer EMS corps throughout CT.

One of the highest-yield PCE roles available. EMT work is direct patient care, involves clinical decision-making, and generates compelling application stories. Yale PA and Quinnipiac both value EMS experience highly.

  • Connecticut has dozens of volunteer EMS corps — many actively recruit pre-PA students
  • CTEMSAC-approved EMT-Basic courses run at Gateway, Naugatuck Valley, and other community colleges
  • Volunteer EMT positions allow you to accumulate hours quickly while working around a school schedule
  • EMT certification also opens doors to paid positions at Yale New Haven EMS and Hartford HealthCare EMS

CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant)

Counts as PCE

80–160 hours/month (full or part-time)

CNA certification programs at Quinnipiac, Gateway Community College, Naugatuck Valley Community College, and other CT community colleges.

CNA work provides consistent, high-volume direct patient care in nursing homes, hospitals, and home health settings. Excellent for building hours quickly.

  • CT community college CNA programs typically run 4–8 weeks
  • Nursing homes and long-term care facilities in CT hire CNAs readily
  • Hospital CNA positions at Yale New Haven and Hartford HealthCare are competitive but available
  • Home health CNA work is flexible and can be done around a school schedule

Medical Scribe

Varies by program

40–80 hours/month

Scribe America and ProScribe place scribes at Yale New Haven Health, Hartford HealthCare, and Nuvance Health sites.

Scribing provides exposure to clinical decision-making, documentation, and physician-patient interactions. Excellent preparation for PA school interviews.

  • Scribe America has active placements at Yale New Haven Hospital and Hartford Hospital
  • Emergency department scribing provides the broadest clinical exposure
  • Some CT PA programs count scribing as PCE and others do not — confirm with each program
  • The clinical knowledge you gain scribing directly prepares you for PA school coursework

Phlebotomist

Counts as PCE

40–80 hours/month

Quest Diagnostics and LabCorp have multiple CT locations. Hospital phlebotomy departments at Yale New Haven, Hartford Hospital, and others.

Phlebotomy is direct patient contact and counts as PCE at most programs. Certification is quick (4–6 weeks) and positions are widely available in CT.

  • Phlebotomy certification courses available at CT community colleges and vocational schools
  • Quest Diagnostics and LabCorp actively hire phlebotomists in CT
  • Hospital phlebotomy positions provide more diverse patient exposure than outpatient labs

Patient Care Technician (PCT)

Counts as PCE

80–160 hours/month

Yale New Haven Health, Hartford HealthCare, Trinity Health, and Nuvance Health all hire PCTs.

PCT roles in hospital settings provide direct patient care including vital signs, EKGs, phlebotomy, and patient transport. High-quality PCE that PA programs value.

  • PCT positions at Yale New Haven and Hartford Hospital are competitive — apply early
  • Some PCT positions require CNA certification or EMT certification
  • Hospital PCT work provides the most diverse and medically complex patient exposure

Hospital Volunteering

Usually NOT PCE

16–40 hours/month

All major CT hospital systems have volunteer programs — Yale New Haven, Hartford HealthCare, Trinity Health, Nuvance, Middlesex.

Hospital volunteering generally does NOT count as direct patient care experience for PA school. However, it can supplement your PCE and create networking opportunities that lead to paid PCE roles.

  • Do not rely on hospital volunteering as your primary PCE source
  • Use volunteering to network with physicians and PAs who can write letters of recommendation
  • Some volunteer roles (patient transport, ED support) are closer to PCE than others — check with each program

Student-Run Clinics & Community Health Centers

HAVEN Free Clinic (Yale)

Student-run free clinic at Yale. Pre-PA volunteers assist with patient intake and health education. Counts as PCE at most programs.

Fair Haven Community Health Care

FQHC in New Haven. Volunteer and employment opportunities with direct patient contact in an underserved community setting.

Cornell Scott-Hill Health Center

FQHC serving New Haven's underserved communities. Volunteer and paid positions available.

Dr. Tomei's Perspective

Student-run free clinics are some of the most meaningful PCE you can get — not just because of the hours, but because of what you see. Underserved patients, complex social situations, and the limits of what medicine can do. If you can get into HAVEN or Fair Haven Community Health, do it. The stories you will have for your personal statement and interviews are invaluable.
