How to Get Clinical Hours in NYC

New York City has more world-class hospitals than anywhere else on earth. Here is how to access them as a pre-med student — and how to make those hours count on your application.

NYC pre-med students have access to an extraordinary clinical environment — NewYork-Presbyterian, Mount Sinai, NYU Langone, Montefiore, Memorial Sloan Kettering, and the entire NYC Health + Hospitals public system. The challenge is not finding opportunities; it is navigating the bureaucracy and standing out in a city where every pre-med student is competing for the same spots.

Dr. Tomei's Perspective

Clinical hours in NYC are abundant but competitive. The key is to apply early, apply to multiple systems simultaneously, and be strategic about which hospitals align with your target schools. If you are applying to Columbia, volunteer at NYP/Columbia. If you are targeting Icahn, get into the Mount Sinai system. Admissions committees notice when your clinical experience aligns with their institution.

Major NYC Hospital Systems

NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital

Washington Heights, Weill Cornell (Upper East Side), Lower Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens

  • NYP Volunteer Services — formal application through each campus
  • Patient transport, patient relations, and clinical support roles
  • Affiliated with both Columbia and Weill Cornell — strong for those targeting those schools
  • Scribing opportunities through third-party companies at NYP campuses
Strategy tip: Apply to multiple NYP campuses simultaneously. The Weill Cornell campus and the Columbia campus have separate volunteer programs. Start early — waitlists can be 3–6 months.

Mount Sinai Health System

Upper East Side, West Village, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island

  • Mount Sinai Volunteer Program — apply through each hospital's volunteer office
  • Patient ambassador and clinical support roles at Mount Sinai Hospital
  • Mount Sinai Morningside and West for additional access points
  • Research volunteer opportunities through Icahn School of Medicine
Strategy tip: Mount Sinai is one of the best systems for pre-med students targeting Icahn. Volunteer experience here is directly relevant to your application narrative.

NYC Health + Hospitals / Bellevue

Kips Bay (Bellevue), Harlem, Elmhurst, Lincoln (Bronx), Kings County (Brooklyn)

  • NYC H+H Volunteer Program — largest public hospital system in the country
  • Bellevue Hospital — one of the most storied public hospitals in American medicine
  • Elmhurst Hospital — one of the most diverse patient populations in the world
  • Strong exposure to underserved populations and urban medicine
Strategy tip: NYC Health + Hospitals is the best place in the country to see the full spectrum of urban medicine. If you are applying to schools that value health equity, this experience is gold.

Montefiore Health System

Morris Park, Wakefield, Westchester Square (The Bronx)

  • Montefiore Volunteer Services — apply through the main campus
  • Albert Einstein-affiliated — strong for applicants targeting Einstein
  • Community health center network throughout the Bronx
  • Research opportunities through Albert Einstein College of Medicine
Strategy tip: Montefiore is the best clinical access point for students targeting Albert Einstein. The Bronx patient population gives you genuine exposure to health disparities.

NYU Langone Health

Kips Bay (main campus), Brooklyn, Long Island, Westchester

  • NYU Langone Volunteer Program — apply through the volunteer services office
  • Tisch Hospital and Kimmel Pavilion for inpatient clinical exposure
  • NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital for specialty exposure
  • Scribing opportunities at NYU Langone urgent care and ED
Strategy tip: NYU Langone is directly affiliated with NYU Grossman School of Medicine. If NYU is a target school, clinical experience here strengthens your application narrative significantly.

Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center

Upper East Side, Manhattan

  • MSK Volunteer Program — competitive but highly regarded
  • Patient support, research assistance, and clinical support roles
  • Exceptional for students interested in oncology
  • Strong research volunteer opportunities through MSK's research programs
Strategy tip: MSK is one of the most prestigious clinical environments in the world. Even a few months of volunteering here adds significant weight to your application, especially if oncology is a stated interest.

Student-Run Free Clinics in NYC

Student-run free clinics are among the most valuable clinical experiences for pre-med students. They demonstrate genuine commitment to underserved populations — something NYC medical schools care deeply about.

Columbia Student Medical Outreach (COSMO)

Student-run free clinic at Columbia University Medical Center. Pre-med volunteers assist with patient intake, health education, and clinical support.

NYU School of Medicine Free Clinic

Student-run clinic serving uninsured patients in Manhattan. Pre-med volunteers work alongside medical students and attending physicians.

Icahn School of Medicine Community Clinics

Mount Sinai student-run clinics in East Harlem and the Bronx. Strong focus on underserved populations and health literacy.

City Health Works

Community health worker organization in Harlem. Volunteer opportunities in health coaching and patient navigation.

Project Renewal Clinics

Free clinics serving homeless and low-income New Yorkers. Volunteer opportunities in multiple Manhattan locations.

Scribing Companies & EMT Programs in NYC

Medical scribing is one of the highest-quality clinical experiences available to pre-med students — you are in the room with the physician, hearing real clinical reasoning in real time. NYC has multiple scribing companies operating at major hospital systems.

ScribeAmerica — active at multiple NYC hospital EDs and urgent care centers
Scribe Connect — NYC metro area placements
ProScribe — NYP and NYU Langone affiliated sites
Hospital-direct scribing programs at Bellevue ED and Mount Sinai ED

Dr. Tomei's Perspective

EMT certification through FDNY or a private EMS company in NYC is one of the best clinical experiences you can get as a pre-med student. You will see more acute pathology in one shift than most volunteers see in a year. FDNY EMS is the busiest EMS system in the country — the clinical exposure is unmatched. If you have the time and commitment, get your EMT-B and work a few shifts a month. It will transform your application narrative.
