Best Pre-Med Colleges in NYC

A physician-written comparison of the best undergraduate programs in New York City for pre-med students — medical school placement, advising quality, research access, and affiliated hospitals.

New York City has more undergraduate pre-med programs than any other city in the country — from Ivy League institutions like Columbia to public universities like Hunter and CCNY. The right choice depends on your financial situation, academic profile, and what you need from a pre-med environment.

Dr. Tomei's Perspective

The school you attend for undergrad matters less than what you do there. I have seen students from Hunter College get into Columbia medical school, and students from Columbia get rejected everywhere. That said, the infrastructure matters — research access, pre-health advising quality, and clinical proximity can make a real difference in how competitive your application becomes. Choose a school where you can thrive academically and access the resources you need.

New York University

Greenwich Village, Manhattan

Med School Placement: Strong — NYU has a large pre-med population and a well-established track record of medical school acceptances, including NYU Grossman
Pre-Health Advising: NYU Pre-Health Advising Center provides committee letters and advising. Quality varies by advisor — seek out the most experienced advisors early.
