How to Get Patient Care Hours in New Jersey for PA School

A physician-written guide to the best ways to build direct patient care experience in New Jersey — EMT, CNA, scribe, phlebotomy, and hospital volunteering at NJ's top medical centers.

Patient care experience (PCE) is the single most important non-academic component of a PA school application. NJ PA programs want to see that you have worked directly with patients — not just observed from a distance. The quality of your experience matters as much as the quantity.

Dr. Tomei's Perspective

The best patient care experiences are the ones that challenged you. Working as an EMT in Newark or a CNA in a long-term care facility in South Jersey is not comfortable — and that is exactly the point. PA programs want to see that you have been in the room with patients who are suffering, scared, or confused, and that you showed up for them anyway. That is what they are training you to do for the rest of your career.

Best Patient Care Roles in New Jersey

EMT / Emergency Medical Technician

High — 500–2,000+ hours possibleExcellent — direct hands-on patient care

EMT certification is one of the strongest patient care experiences for PA school applicants. NJ has a robust EMS system with both paid and volunteer opportunities across the state.

  • NJ EMT-Basic certification requires ~120 hours of training — offered through community colleges, hospitals, and private training centers
  • Rutgers, Princeton, Seton Hall, and TCNJ all have student EMS squads — join early in your undergraduate career
  • Volunteer first aid squads operate in nearly every NJ municipality — apply directly to your local squad
  • Paid EMT positions are available through private ambulance companies (MONOC, Hackensack Meridian EMS, RWJBarnabas EMS)
  • NJ EMS Task Force offers advanced training and disaster response experience

CNA / Certified Nursing Assistant

High — consistent hours in a clinical settingExcellent — direct patient care with hands-on skills

CNA certification provides consistent, direct patient care hours and is highly valued by PA programs. NJ has numerous CNA training programs and a strong demand for CNAs across its hospital systems.

  • NJ CNA certification requires ~90 hours of training — offered through community colleges, nursing homes, and hospital training programs
  • RWJBarnabas Health, Hackensack Meridian, and Atlantic Health all hire CNAs — many offer tuition assistance for certification
  • Nursing homes and long-term care facilities in NJ are excellent for consistent hours and patient relationships
  • Home health aide (HHA) certification is a faster alternative — similar patient care exposure
  • Many NJ hospitals have CNA-to-RN bridge programs that provide additional clinical training

Medical Scribe

Moderate to High — 500–1,500+ hours possibleGood — clinical exposure but indirect patient care at most programs

Medical scribing provides excellent clinical exposure and teaches you how physicians think and document. Some PA programs count scribing as patient care experience; others classify it as healthcare experience.

  • ScribeAmerica — operates at multiple NJ hospitals and urgent care centers; paid position
  • Scribe Connect — NJ-based scribing company with placements at RWJBarnabas and Atlantic Health
  • ProScribe — placements at emergency departments and specialty clinics across NJ
  • Hospital-employed scribes — Hackensack Meridian and Cooper hire scribes directly
  • Check whether your target PA programs count scribing as direct patient care — policies vary

Phlebotomist

Moderate — consistent part-time hoursGood — direct patient contact with technical skills

Phlebotomy certification is a fast path to paid clinical work in NJ. Phlebotomists have direct patient contact and develop technical skills that PA programs value.

  • NJ phlebotomy certification programs are available at community colleges and private training centers — typically 4–8 weeks
  • Quest Diagnostics and LabCorp have numerous NJ locations and hire phlebotomists
  • Hospital laboratory departments at RWJBarnabas, Hackensack Meridian, and Atlantic Health hire phlebotomists
  • Urgent care centers and outpatient clinics also hire phlebotomists for part-time positions
  • Combine phlebotomy with another role (EMT or CNA) for maximum hour accumulation

Hospital Volunteer Programs

Low to Moderate — typically 4–8 hours/weekVariable — depends on role; some are direct patient care, others are not

Hospital volunteering is a starting point, but most PA programs require direct patient care hours — not just observation or administrative volunteering. Choose roles with genuine patient interaction.

  • RWJBarnabas Health volunteer programs — apply through each hospital's volunteer services department
  • Hackensack Meridian Health volunteer programs — formal application process; competitive at flagship campuses
  • Cooper University Hospital in Camden — strong volunteer program with genuine patient care exposure
  • Atlantic Health System (Morristown, Overlook) — volunteer programs with patient transport and care support roles
  • Ask specifically for roles with direct patient contact — avoid purely administrative positions

Student-Run Free Clinics

Moderate — typically 2–4 hours/week during academic yearExcellent — direct patient care in underserved settings

Student-run free clinics in NJ provide exceptional patient care experience in underserved communities. These experiences are highly valued by PA programs with community health missions.

  • Rutgers NJMS Free Clinic (Newark) — pre-PA and pre-med students assist with patient intake and navigation
  • Cooper Medical School Free Clinic (Camden) — one of the most impactful free clinic experiences in NJ
