Our Services
Physician-Led BS/MD & BS/DO Admissions Consulting
Work directly with Mario Tomei, MD, MBA, MHA, CHSE — physician, university educator, and former medical school admissions committee member — for personalized guidance through BS/MD, BA/MD and BS/DO program selection, application strategy, essays and interviews.
Progression to the medical-school portion of a combined program remains subject to each program's academic, testing, conduct and other requirements.
Assessment takes about 3 minutes. Receive a personalized BS/MD readiness score and next steps.
BS/MD programs admit students directly from high school into a guaranteed or conditional medical school pathway — eliminating the traditional pre-med application process. The most selective programs enroll small cohorts from large applicant pools. The students who succeed apply with a clear, mature commitment to medicine and a strategy built specifically for these programs.

Why BS/MD Consulting Is Different From College Counseling
A standard college counselor helps students build a college list, write a personal statement, and navigate the Common Application. That expertise is valuable — but it is not sufficient for a BS/MD or BS/DO application.
Combined-degree applicants must simultaneously demonstrate undergraduate fit and a mature, evidence-based commitment to medicine. Committees evaluate clinical exposure, the depth and authenticity of a student's medical motivation, and the ability to articulate — at 17 or 18 — why medicine is the right path and why this program is the right vehicle.
Physician-led guidance can help students connect their clinical experiences, motivation for medicine, and long-term professional goals into a credible application narrative. MedTrack Mentors provides support across both dimensions: clinical exposure strategy, medical motivation development, program-specific essay coaching, and interview preparation with physician-style questioning.
Two Advising Pathways
The right engagement depends on where your student is in the process. We work with students beginning as early as 9th grade and with seniors applying this cycle.
Early Preparation
Students in Grades 9–11
The most competitive BS/MD applicants begin building their profile years before the application. We help students use that time strategically.
- Academic and course-planning guidance
- Clinical exposure and physician-shadowing strategy
- Community service, research and leadership development
- SAT or ACT planning aligned to target programs
- Summer-opportunity planning
- Long-term BS/MD and BS/DO competitiveness roadmap
Active Application
Grade 12 Students Applying This Cycle
For seniors in the middle of the application cycle, we provide full-cycle support across every component of the dual application.
- Program selection and balanced application list
- Common Application and "Why Medicine" narrative strategy
- BS/MD and BS/DO supplemental essays
- Activities positioning
- Traditional and MMI interview preparation
- Application timeline and parent guidance
What We Do
Combined-program advising requires a completely different strategy from standard college counseling. We specialize in BS/MD, BA/MD and BS/DO applications.
Program Research & Selection
Identifying the right BS/MD, BA/MD and BS/DO programs based on your academic profile, specialty interests, and geographic preferences — combined medical programs are offered by institutions across the U.S., and each has distinct requirements.
Application Strategy
A coordinated strategy that manages both the college application and the combined-program supplemental application simultaneously — ensuring neither suffers from divided attention.
Essay Development
Detailed coaching on the combined-program-specific essays that ask you to articulate your commitment to medicine at 17 or 18 years old — one of the most challenging writing tasks in any application process.
Interview Preparation
Mock interviews tailored to BS/MD and BS/DO program formats, which often include physician interviewers and questions designed to test the maturity and certainty of your commitment to medicine.
Timeline & Coordination
Managing the complex dual-application timeline — college applications, combined-program supplementals, and early decision deadlines — so nothing falls through the cracks.
Activity-List Positioning
Helping students present clinical exposure, community service, and academic achievements in a way that speaks directly to what combined-program committees evaluate.
Parent & Student Strategy Meetings
We work with both students and their families to ensure everyone understands the commitment involved and the realistic expectations for these highly competitive programs.
Enrollment-Decision Guidance
Once acceptances arrive, we help students and families evaluate offers, understand progression requirements, and make an informed final decision.
Common Application Strategy
Aligning the Common Application — activities, honors, short answers, and main essay — with the combined-program narrative without sacrificing authenticity or college-fit messaging.

Who We Help
- High school juniors beginning to research BS/MD, BA/MD and BS/DO programs
- High school seniors actively applying to combined-degree programs
- Students with strong academic profiles and a clear commitment to medicine
- Students interested in osteopathic medicine exploring BS/DO pathways
- Families navigating the combined-program process for the first time
BS/DO Admissions Advising
BS/DO programs connect undergraduate education with an osteopathic medical school pathway. Like BS/MD programs, they are designed for students who are committed to medicine before they begin college. Applicants should carefully evaluate each program's progression requirements, minimum GPA, testing policies, interview requirements, and expectations concerning osteopathic medicine.
Competitive BS/DO applicants typically demonstrate:
- A mature and informed interest in medicine
- An understanding of osteopathic medical education and its philosophy
- Meaningful clinical exposure
- Community service
- Strong academic preparation in science and math
- Clear reasons for selecting the specific program
- Readiness for interviews and supplemental essays
BS/DO programs are rigorous, competitive pathways. They are not safety options or less demanding alternatives to BS/MD programs.
BS/MD, BA/MD and BS/DO Programs
A concise overview of the three combined-degree program types. Individual program requirements vary — applicants must confirm current information directly with each institution.
| Program type | Undergraduate degree | Medical degree | Typical application stage | Important factors to verify |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BS/MD | Bachelor of Science | MD (allopathic) | High school senior application | Progression GPA, MCAT waiver policy, program length, affiliated medical school |
| BA/MD | Bachelor of Arts | MD (allopathic) | High school senior application | Progression GPA, MCAT waiver policy, program length, affiliated medical school |
| BS/DO | Bachelor of Science | DO (osteopathic) | High school senior application | Progression GPA, MCAT waiver policy, osteopathic philosophy requirements, affiliated DO school |
Requirements, progression criteria, and program structures vary by institution. Verify all details directly with each program.

Guidance for Students and Parents
Combined-degree applications often begin while students are still in high school — sometimes as early as 9th or 10th grade. The process involves two simultaneous applications, multiple essay sets, and program-specific requirements that most families encounter for the first time.
MedTrack Mentors helps families understand timelines, expectations, and program differences — including the distinction between BS/MD, BA/MD and BS/DO pathways — while keeping the student's authentic voice and goals at the center of the application. Parents are informed and involved; the student's story remains their own. Based on Long Island, MedTrack Mentors works with BS/MD and BS/DO applicants virtually nationwide.
For families beginning this process, our BS/MD decision framework and application timeline guide are good starting points. The BS/MD program comparison guide covers current program examples and what to verify before applying.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a BS/MD and BS/DO program?
BS/MD programs lead to an MD degree from an allopathic (LCME-accredited) medical school. BS/DO programs lead to a DO degree from an osteopathic (COCA-accredited) medical school. Both are combined undergraduate-to-medical-school pathways that begin at the high school application stage. Requirements, progression criteria, and program structures vary significantly — students should research each program individually.
When should students begin preparing for BS/MD or BS/DO applications?
Ideally, preparation begins in 9th or 10th grade, when students still have time to build meaningful clinical exposure, develop a consistent academic record, and explore their interest in medicine. Students who begin in 11th grade can still build a competitive application, but the timeline is tighter. Starting in 12th grade limits options significantly.
Do all combined medical programs require the MCAT?
Requirements vary by program. Some BS/MD and BS/DO programs waive the MCAT for students who maintain the required GPA and meet other progression criteria. Others require it. Students must verify current MCAT policies directly with each program they are considering, as policies can change.
Can students apply to both BS/MD and BS/DO programs?
Yes. Many students apply to both BS/MD and BS/DO programs simultaneously. The application processes are separate — BS/MD programs typically use the Common Application with school-specific supplementals, while BS/DO programs may have their own application requirements. Students should research each program's process individually.
What experience should a competitive applicant have?
Competitive applicants typically demonstrate meaningful clinical exposure (shadowing, volunteering, or patient-care work), community service, strong academic preparation in science and math, and a clear and informed interest in medicine. The specific depth and type of experience that matters varies by program. Students should not fabricate or exaggerate experiences.
Does admission guarantee progression to medical school?
No. Admission to a combined-degree program does not guarantee progression to the medical school portion. Students must meet each program's academic, testing, conduct, and other requirements throughout the undergraduate years. Progression criteria vary by program and students should review them carefully before enrolling.
