Physician-Led Admissions Guidance

Helping Your Child Navigate Medical School Admissions With Clarity and Confidence

Medical school admissions is one of the most competitive and emotionally demanding processes a family can face. The stakes are high, the timeline is long, and the process is opaque — even for parents who are highly educated professionals themselves.

MedTrack Mentors was founded by Dr. Mario Tomei, MD, MBA, MHA — a practicing physician, former medical school admissions committee member, and professor with more than 20 years in higher education. We work directly with students and their families to build a strategy that is honest, personalized, and grounded in how admissions actually works.

Based on Long Island and serving families nationwide and internationally, MedTrack Mentors provides personalized, physician-led guidance wherever your student's journey begins.

What Parents Need to Know

The process is longer than most families expect

Medical school applications span multiple years of preparation — GPA, MCAT, clinical hours, research, letters of recommendation, and a multi-stage application cycle. Starting early and planning strategically makes a measurable difference.

Admissions is not just about grades

Committees evaluate the whole applicant: clinical exposure, character, communication, and fit. A student with a strong GPA and no strategy can be outcompeted by a student with a clear, well-presented narrative.

Your role matters — but so does the boundary

Parents who are too involved can inadvertently undermine their student's application. We help families understand how to support without overstepping, and how to have productive conversations about the process.

Physician-led guidance is different

Dr. Tomei has served on a medical school admissions committee. He knows what reviewers look for, what disqualifies strong candidates, and how to position an application for the programs most likely to say yes.

Questions Families Often Ask

Before committing to any advising relationship, most parents want honest answers to a few core questions. Here is how we approach each of them.

How is this different from a college counselor or pre-health advisor?

College counselors and pre-health advisors help students navigate undergraduate requirements and general career planning. MedTrack Mentors is physician-led: Dr. Tomei has served on a medical school admissions committee, practiced medicine for more than 25 years, and taught in higher education for more than 20 years. The guidance is grounded in how admissions actually works — not how it is described in brochures.

What happens if my student is not accepted in their first application cycle?

Reapplication is common and, when handled strategically, often successful. We help families understand what went wrong in the first cycle — whether that is a school list that was too narrow, a personal statement that did not land, or a GPA or MCAT that needed more time — and build a stronger reapplication. We do not make admissions guarantees, but we do give families an honest picture of what a second cycle requires.

How can I stay informed without taking over my student's application?

Parents are welcome on the free 20-minute application audit call and at key milestone check-ins throughout the process. We keep families informed about where things stand — timelines, decisions, next steps — while making sure the student remains the one driving the application. The goal is for your student to arrive at medical school having genuinely earned their place.

When Should We Start?

There is no single right answer — it depends on where your student is in their journey. We work with families at every stage.

During the undergraduate years

The earlier a student begins with a clear strategy, the more options they have. Freshman or sophomore year is the ideal time to establish a plan for GPA, clinical experience, MCAT timing, and extracurriculars. Our four-year mentorship programs are designed for families who want this level of continuity.

During the application cycle

If your student is preparing to apply — or is already in the middle of an application cycle — we can help with school list strategy, personal statement and secondary essay coaching, and interview preparation. Focused, cycle-specific support is available without a long-term commitment.

After an unsuccessful cycle

Reapplication requires a clear-eyed assessment of what did not work and a concrete plan to address it. We help families understand the honest reasons behind a rejection and build a stronger second application — whether that means a higher MCAT, a revised school list, or a stronger narrative.

Levels of Support and Pricing

MedTrack Mentors offers different levels of engagement depending on where your student is and what they need — from a focused consultation or single-service engagement to full-cycle mentorship that spans the entire application process. For families who want physician-led guidance from the beginning of college, our four-year programs provide the most comprehensive support we offer.

The appropriate level of support — and what it involves — is something we discuss directly during the free 20-minute application audit. There is no obligation, and the conversation itself is useful regardless of whether you move forward.

How We Work With Families

Every engagement begins with a free 20-minute application audit. Parents are welcome on the call — many of our most productive initial conversations include both the student and their family. We use that time to understand where your student is, what their goals are, and what kind of support would be most useful.

Families receive continuity, clarity, and direct guidance from the same senior advisor throughout their selected program. Parents are included appropriately while students develop the independence expected of future healthcare professionals.

Dr. Mario Tomei, MD, MBA, MHA, CHSE

Dr. Tomei is a practicing physician, former medical school admissions committee member, and professor with more than 25 years in healthcare and more than 20 years in higher education. He has taught at the university level, spoken at schools and hospitals across the region, and authored two published guides on medical school admissions — including The Medical School Admissions Roadmap and The Medical School Secondary Essay Playbook. He founded MedTrack Mentors because he saw firsthand how many qualified students were being rejected — not because they weren't ready, but because they didn't know how to present themselves.

Dr. Robert I. Gluck, MD — former Chief of Hand Surgery at Long Island Jewish/Northwell Health and Associate Professor at Hofstra University — serves as Senior Advisor to MedTrack Mentors, contributing strategic guidance and clinical perspective to the mentorship model. Students work directly with Dr. Tomei for all advising sessions.

MedTrack Mentors has advised students pursuing MD, DO, PA, dental, and nursing programs. Full-cycle clients who reported their admissions outcomes include students accepted to Harvard Medical School, Johns Hopkins, NYU Grossman, Columbia, Cornell Weill, and Stony Brook Renaissance, among others.

Why MedTrack Mentors

At MedTrack Mentors, every student works directly with a physician mentor — not a generalist consultant. That distinction matters at every stage of the process.

Direct physician mentorship

Every student works directly with Dr. Tomei — a practicing physician and former admissions committee member. Physician-led. Individualized. No handoffs.

Former admissions committee insight

Dr. Tomei has reviewed applications from the other side of the table. He knows what reviewers look for, what language signals a weak application, and how to position a student's story for the programs most likely to say yes.

Honest assessment

We tell families the truth about where their student stands — including when the timeline needs to be adjusted, when a school list needs to be rebuilt, or when a gap year is the right strategic decision.
